New Space Music

New Space Music, by Brian Eno, played
from the roof of the eco-pagoda
as I thought about speaking
to my imposing, slightly balding, mentor.

Should I enter the trance now?
I had asked him that morning,
but it appeared he did not have the desire
to enter speech – instead he merely
pointed at the rising sun, like an unbreakable rule.

Should I enter the trance now? I asked a tree.
Should I enter the trance now? I whispered into the lake.

The pagoda creaked in the wind
reminding me of a bathroom door
from my past. I did not wish to cower to my past –
I did not wish to cower to my past at all –

so I turned off my music and stood
on the balcony of the eco-pagoda, letting them –
the trees, the lake, my mentor – see who I really am,
for I have my own trances, and I am also bald.
